On April 22, 1998, USDA Facility Operations Director Clayton T. Iijima and USDA Entomology Supervisor Morley M. Suzuki met with USDA employee David Rothman. At some point during the meeting, Rothman removed a .38 caliber pistol and shot and killed Iijima and Suzuki before turning the weapon on himself. No clear motive for the shootings was given.
