The Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is a voluntary, work-based program that provides cost-free and confidential assessment, short-term counseling, referral, and follow-up services to employees and their eligible family members who have personal and/or work-related problems that may affect attendance, work performance, and/or conduct.

- Domestic Partner
- Dependent Children
- Other persons living in the same household of the employee

- Emotional Issues
- Life Transitions /Worklife Issues
- Any issue that has the potential of impacting work or your personal life
What Do EAP Services Include?
- Confidential counseling for personal and work problems (in-person, telephone, video)
- Online information and resources
- Pre-paid by your employer; there is no cost to you
- Up to twelve free counseling sessions per issue per year
- Employees and their dependents are covered by the EAP
Are EAP Services Confidential?
Services are confidential.
- Written permission for disclosure is required
- Information is not shared with CBP
- No identification of individuals in agency reports
- Seeking help does not impact your security clearance
In some specific situations, your information can be shared without your permission. Common exceptions to confidentiality are:
- Child/Elder Abuse or neglect
- Harm to self or others
- Court Order
The EAP can provide valuable assistance to supervisors and managers.
- Consult with managers who are dealing with employees who are experiencing personal problems that are affecting their work performance
- Provide training to managers and employees on a variety of workplace related topics
- Provide critical incident response telephonically or on-site when needed
Critical Incident Response Services
Offices impacted by a critical incident or traumatic event can contact the EAP directly to request counselors who can provide critical incident response services to support employees, managers, and the organization after a disturbing or traumatic event. The goal of the critical incident intervention is to minimize the potential impact of a traumatic event by helping employees return to normal productivity as quickly as possible. The crisis response activities may include individual consultations, psychological first aid, critical incident briefing, defusings and debriefings.
