Houlton, Maine - Two subjects are in custody following an incident along the international border between the Woodstock and Houlton, Maine ports of entry.
At approximately 3:30 p.m. EST today, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers arrested two male Canadian citizens after they stopped their vehicle between the ports of entry and refused to communicate with federal, state and local law enforcement on both sides of the border.
The disruption began around 9:15 a.m. EST and resulted in a complete stoppage of traffic at both ports for more than six hours. The two men remain in CBP custody as this is an ongoing investigation involving U.S. and Canadian law enforcement. Criminal charges may result in both the U.S. and Canada.
“I commend the coordinated work of our CBP officers, U.S. Border Patrol agents, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Canada Border Services Agency and Maine State Police which was essential to resolving this incident safely and securely,” said Houlton Port Director Christopher M. Doughty.
Traffic remains halted at this time and notification will be made as to when normal operations resume.
