Traffic delays expected at Sumas Port of Entry due to lane renovations

SUMAS, Wash. — U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), Office of Field Operations at the Sumas Port of Entry has begun a one month project to renovate all five vehicle lanes.

Initial work got underway the morning of April 11 with the closure of lane one for at least 30 days. The existing pavement will be removed and replaced with a more suitable and durable surface which will allow for recreational vehicles, motorhomes and bus traffic to use the lane.                    

“Arriving passengers to the Sumas Port of Entry should expect delays due to the construction,” said Port Director Diane Sandoval. “It may be prudent for travelers to have flexible travel plans, which may include using the Blaine or Lynden border crossings during the construction period.”

The remaining traffic lanes and the dedicated NEXUS/RFID Lane will remain open during the reconstruction of lane one. During weekdays, arriving RVs and oversize trailer traffic should utilize lane two. Bus traffic will continue to use the next available passenger lane nearest the port building. On weekends only, all RV and oversize trailers may be redirected through the Sumas commercial traffic lane. Advisory signage will be posted north of the CBP Sumas Port of Entry at the commercial truck turn-off located at the intersection of Sumas Way (British Columbia Highway 11) and 4th Avenue in Abbotsford, British Columbia.

Wait times can be monitored on the internet or via mobile app. The free CBP Border Wait Times app is available at the Apple App Store and Google Play. The app provides estimated wait times and open lane status 24/7 at ports of entry that process commercial vehicles, passenger vehicles, and pedestrians. It breaks down wait times at each crossing by lane type (Standard, SENTRI, FAST, Ready Lane, Nexus, etc.). The app does not require individuals to register or provide any personal information. Information is updated hourly and is useful in planning trips, as it allows travelers to identify periods of light use/short waits.

CBP is charged with keeping terrorists and terrorist weapons out of the country while enforcing hundreds of U.S. laws.
