CALEXICO, Calif. – U.S. Border Patrol agents assigned to the El Centro Sector arrested a previously deported convicted sex offender on Monday.
A 33-year-old man was apprehended by Border Patrol agents near Ocotillo after he illegally entered the United States.
Border Patrol agents conducted records checks which revealed that the man, a Mexican citizen, was convicted as a juvenile on April 13, 2003 in Minneapolis, Minn., for Criminal Sexual Conduct-First Degree Penetration Acts with a Child. He received one year in prison and a fine. The man also has a pending charge for failing to register as a predator offender in Sept. of 2009. He was previously removed from the United States on Nov. 13, 2015.
“I am proud of the great work Border Patrol agents demonstrated in stopping this previously deported convicted sex offender,” said Chief Patrol Agent Gloria I. Chavez. “Their actions have kept our communities safe.”
The man is being held pending further criminal prosecution.
In fiscal year 2018, El Centro Sector Border Patrol agents arrested 37 convicted sex offenders attempting to re-enter the United States after removal.
