TUCSON, Arizona — Yesterday, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Commissioner R. Gil Kerlikowske along with Administrator General of Mexico Customs, Ricardo Treviño, announced a Unified Cargo Processing proof-of-concept pilot project at the Mariposa Port of Entry in Nogales, Arizona.  Under the Unified Cargo Processing pilot, CBP and Mexico’s Tax Administration Service (SAT) will conduct joint cargo clearance examinations at the Arizona Port of Nogales Mariposa cargo facilityeliminating separate inspections and subsequently reducing wait times at the border.

“These concurrent examinations at the Mariposa cargo facility will save our trade stakeholders both time and money while increasing border security and maintaining the integrity of the cargo supply chain,” said Commissioner Kerlikowske.

Reduced wait times and more efficient examinations will lower the cost of doing business in the region and enhance national security for both countries reflecting both the United States and Mexico’s shared commitment in facilitating cross-border commerce.

Today, Commissioner Kerlikowske co-hosted a Building Strong Border Communities event with Assistant Commissioner Canales of the Mexican Federal Police at Pima Community College in Tucson, Arizona.  This event highlighted the strong, collaborative U.S - Mexico partnership and shared commitment to keep border communities in both countries safe and secure.  The Mexico Federal Police Symphony and Mariachi Band performed during the event and displays from both agencies were available for the public.
