Marfa, Texas - Agents from Marfa Sector's Van Horn Station have become "Partners" to students of Eagle Elementary School in Van Horn. The agents will help students increase their reading capabilities as part of the Accelerated Reader program. The program kicked off September 21, 2010.
Twice a week for an hour, agents will provide the assistance to kindergarten through fifth grade.
"This is a great opportunity for our agents to get to know the kids in the community," said Marfa Sector Chief Patrol Agent John J. Smietana, Jr. "It also provides a chance for the kids, and the teachers and administrators, to interact in a positive way with the Van Horn agents. We try to never miss a chance to give back to the communities we serve."
As part of the Accelerated Reader program, students are tested on the books they read and receive points based on their grade. At the end of the school year, the Van Horn Station will reward the boy and girl with the highest grade with a bicycle.
