LAREDO, Texas – Laredo Sector Border Patrol and Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) apprehend several undocumented individuals after a human smuggler failed to yield and collided with a civilian vehicle, causing a fiery accident in south Laredo.

crash with DPS
A vehicle smuggling undocumented individuals causes
a fiery accident.

The incident occurred during the late afternoon of August 16, when agents from the Laredo South Station

responded to a report of a suspicious gray Dodge sedan traveling north on U.S. Highway 83 from the Webb/Zapata county line.  Agents located the vehicle near Magana Hein Road and requested assistance from Customs and Border Protection Air and Marine Operations (AMO) and DPS.  DPS attempted a vehicle stop but the vehicle failed to yield to law enforcement and fled north on Cuatro Vientos Boulevard.  A short time later, the suspect vehicle collided with a civilian vehicle, causing a rollover, as the driver attempted to make a U-turn at the intersection of Lomas Del Sur.  The driver and occupants attempted to flee from the accident scene but were quickly apprehended with the help of an AMO air asset.  Laredo Fire Department rapidly responded and provided medical aid on scene.  No injuries were reported.

The individuals apprehended were illegally present in the country from the countries of Mexico, Honduras, and Guatemala and were taken into custody for further investigation.

This incident is another example of how human smugglers selfishly choose to flee when encountered by law enforcement, endangering the lives of the people they attempt to exploit and the lives of the people of Laredo and our surrounding communities.  Laredo Sector will continue to collaborate with their law enforcement partners to carry out the U.S. Border Patrol’s mission of protecting the American people, safeguarding our borders, and enhancing the Nation’s economic prosperity.

Help take a stand against these criminal organizations and potentially dangerous acts by reporting suspicious activity in our neighborhoods.  To report suspicious activity such as alien and/or drug smuggling, download the “USBP Laredo Sector” App or contact the Laredo Sector Border Patrol toll free at 1-800-343-1994.
