How to Apply for Global Entry
Citizens of Japan can apply for Global Entry (GE) through U.S. Custom and Border Protection’s (CBP) Trusted Traveler Programs (TTP) website.
Application Process
- Submit a Global Entry application on the TTP website and pay the non-refundable application processing fee, if applicable (there is no application fee for applicants 14-17 years of age whose parent or legal guardian is a TTP member or pending member). Your application will be vetted by the competent authorities of the United States of America and Japan to assess whether your application is deemed eligible. Applicants must be at least 14 years of age without any previous conviction records. Japanese applicants under the age of 18 must have the consent of a parent or legal guardian to participate in the program.
- Your GE application status will be viewable in your TTP dashboard (pending, conditionally approved, or denied).
- After the GE application is submitted via the TTP website, applicants must submit a copy of their family register, koseki, to Japan Immigration Services Agency (JISA). JISA may contact applicants during the vetting process for Global Entry enrollment so please pay attention to the following information in the application:
- Phone No.: Please enter a weekday phone number at which the applicant can be contacted during Japan local business hours.
- Email Address: Please set up your email to accept email from the domain “@i.moj.go.jp”.
- Address: If the applicant’s current address is different from the mailing address or if the current address is overseas but the applicant has a mailing address in Japan, please enter the additional address in the “Mailing Address” field.
Applicants must send a KOSEKI ZENBUJIKO SHOMEISHO (KOSEKI TOHON) (original only) to the following address by simple registered mail (Kani-kakitome) no later than 30 days after receiving their PASSID from CBP:

Tokyo Regional Immigration Bureau- Submit a copy of the applicant's family register that was issued within the past three months
- Write the PASSID in pencil in the upper right-hand margin of the family register copy. A PASSID will be received after finishing the application is submitted via the TTP website.
Note: Additional copies of family registers may be necessary in some circumstances when the Chinese characters (kanji) of the name and/or legal address needs to be confirmed. If additional copies of family registers are requested by Inspection Coordination Department of Tokyo Regional Immigration Bureau, please send them to the above address (Inspection Coordination Department (GEP Personnel), Tokyo Regional Immigration Bureau).

Office hours: 9:00 am ~ 5:00 pm, Japan Local Time, except Saturday, Sunday and Holidays - If conditionally approved, follow instructions to schedule an interview at a Global Entry Enrollment Center or use the Enrollment on Arrival (EoA) option that is available when entering the U.S. from abroad. No appointment is required for the EoA process, and additional information can be found on the Enrollment on Arrival website.
- You must bring your passport and a photo ID that shows your correct residence address with you to the interview. If you are a lawful permanent resident, you must present your permanent resident card. During the interview a U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer will ask you questions and collect your biometric information (fingerprints, if applicable, and photo).
- After your interview, CBP will send an email/notification to your TTP dashboard regarding your final eligibility determination. If approved, your Global Entry benefits will begin immediately.
Maintaining Global Entry Membership
Membership in the Global Entry program is valid for five years. To ensure continuity of Global Entry Benefits after the initial 5 year validity period has lapsed, you must submit a renewal application via the TTP website prior to your membership expiration date. CBP will send a reminder to the email address on file in your GE account prior to your membership expiration date. Renewals may be submitted up to 364 days in advance of the membership expiration date.
Other Benefits
Once enrolled in Global Entry you will be eligible to use TSA Precheck. You will not receive a Global Entry card, but possession of a GE card is not required for receive TSA Precheck benefits. Instead you will need to enter your GE membership number in the airline reservation to receive the Precheck benefit while traveling domestically throughout the United States. Travel Requirements
All Japanese Global Entry members must have a valid passport and a valid visa or approved Electronic System for Travel Authorization’s (ESTA) application to utilize the Global Entry border processing technology to enter the United States. As a GE member, you are required to maintain current passport information via your TTP Dashboard. However, if you obtain a new visa or change your name then you must notify CBP in-person at a Global Entry Enrollment Center-no appointment necessary for name change or visa information updates. If the information in your account is incorrect or incomplete, the GE border processing technology will not properly, and may incorrectly calculate your digital I-94 data and you may not be able to receive TSA Precheck benefits while traveling throughout the United States.
