CALEXICO, Calif. – Border Patrol agents assigned to El Centro Sector arrested a gang member Wednesday afternoon, 42 miles west of the Calexico Port of Entry, suspected of illegally entering the United States.

At around 5:30 p.m., Border Patrol agents patrolling west of the Calexico Port of Entry arrested Hugo Evangelista-Ibanes on suspicion of illegal entry into the United States and transported him to a Border Patrol facility for further processing.

Agents confirmed his identity and discovered he was a 36-year-old Mexican national that had been removed from the United States on two previous occasions. Agents also discovered that he had an extensive criminal history and served a 60-month sentence in Oregon for unlawful use of a weapon in 2011. Evangelista admitted that he is a member of the Sureño street gang.

Evangelista is being held in custody pending prosecution for felony Federal charges.
