It saddens me to report that late in the evening on August 3, Border Patrol Agent Javier Vega was shot and killed during an aggravated robbery attempt while fishing off-duty near Harlingen, Texas.
Agent Vega served the U.S. Marine Corps before joining the United States Border Patrol in 2008. It is a tragic day that we lay one of our own to rest under any circumstance. There are no words to fully express our appreciation for Agent Vega’s commitment and service to his country. Our thoughts and prayers are with Agent Vega’s family at this difficult time. CBP’s Border Patrol, Border Patrol Tactical Unit (BORTAC), Air and Marine, and Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) were instrumental in tracking and apprehending the suspects. CBP continues to support the ongoing investigation.
