EDINBURG, Texas – Austin L. Skero II, Deputy Chief Patrol Agent of the Rio Grande Valley Sector(RGV), departs this week to lead the men and women of Del Rio Sector as their new Chief Patrol Agent.

Chief Skero took on the role of Deputy Chief of the RGV in 2019, at a time when the sector experienced a surge of illegal alien apprehensions. The Chief led the sector in the coordination of several binational enforcement efforts, managed critical operational programs, and developed local policy and program initiatives.

With more than 30 years of law enforcement experience, Chief Skero began his career with the U.S. Border Patrol in February 1995 at the Brownsville Station in RGV Sector as a member of Academy Class 279. His work ethic and leadership abilities allowed him to climb the ranks and serve in several key leadership roles in Texas, New Mexico, North Dakota and Washington, DC. Prior to joining the Border Patrol, he served as a Deputy Sheriff in central Texas.

His achievements have garnered him many awards and commendations, the most notable of which is the Border Patrol’s highest award for valor, the Newton-Azrak Award.

“Being back in RGV Sector has been an absolute privilege,” said Chief Skero. “The employees, people and partnerships here in the Valley are exceptional and I will miss the area greatly.  I’m not moving far though, just a bit upriver to Del Rio, so I’ll be stopping in from time to time and staying in touch with the many friends I have made here.”
