Border Patrol Seizes Dangerous Drugs at Checkpoint

SALTON CITY, Calif.El Centro Sector Border Patrol agents working at the Highway 86 immigration checkpoint arrested a man suspected of smuggling narcotics Saturday morning.

El Centro Sector Border Patrol agents working at the Highway 86 immigration checkpoint arrested a man suspected of smuggling narcotics Saturday morning.The incident occurred at approximately 1:40 a.m., when a 26-year-old man driving a black Ford Explorer approached the checkpoint.  A Border Patrol K-9 detection team alerted to the vehicle.  Agents sent the vehicle to secondary inspection for further investigation.

While in secondary inspection, Border Patrol agents discovered several bags and packages inside the rear cargo area where the spare tire sits.  Agents found two bags and a gum container with a crystal like substance inside that tested positive for the characteristics of methamphetamine.  Agents also found a zip-sealed plastic bag containing pills that tested positive for fentanyl, and six small packages and a tin foil paper containing a substance that tested positive for heroin.

The total weight of the narcotics discovered was 13.09 grams of fentanyl, one pound of methamphetamine and 6.4 grams of heroin with an estimated value of $6,670.

The man, a United States citizen, the narcotics and vehicle were turned over to the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area Unit.
