by Border Patrol Saturday morning.

OCOTILLO, Calif. – U.S. Border Patrol agents assigned to the El Centro Sector arrested an individual convicted of attempted murder Saturday morning.

The incident occurred at around 3:45 a.m., when agents assigned to the El Centro Station apprehended a suspect approximately 20 miles west of the Calexico West Downtown Port of Entry.

The man, an illegal alien from Mexico, was transported to a rally point for processing where agents conducted a criminal background investigation and further medical screening.

At the rally point, a records check revealed that the 35-year-old illegal alien from Mexico was convicted of “Attempted Murder” on February 9, 2009 in Santa Barbara, California, where he was sentenced to 10 years in prison for his crime.  He was also convicted of “Sexual Battery” in Santa Barbara on January 22, 2007 and was sentenced to 270 days in prison for that crime.  The suspect told agents during his interview that he was initially traveling to Chicago to visit friends before heading to his final destination in Santa Barbara.

Additionally, the illegal alien was previously ordered removed from the United States on November 27, 2007.

“The cities of Chicago and Santa Barbara can rest a little easier tonight knowing that this convicted felon will not be in their communities,” said Chief Patrol Agent Gregory K. Bovino. “I commend the agents on the front lines for their vigilance, service and integrity, which ensures illegal aliens like this don’t continue their criminal ways of life here in the United States.”

The suspect is being held in federal custody pending further criminal prosecution.
