SALTON CITY, Calif. – El Centro Sector Border Patrol agents working at the Highway 86 immigration checkpoint stopped a woman and man suspected of smuggling narcotics Thursday morning.
The incident occurred at approximately 8:35 a.m., when a 34-year-old woman driving a black Lexus and her passenger, a 31-year-old man, approached the checkpoint. A Border Patrol K-9 detection team alerted to the vehicle in the primary inspection lane. Agents directed the vehicle to enter the secondary inspection area for further investigation.
While in secondary inspection, Border Patrol agents discovered two small bags concealed inside a resealed bag of chips. Agents determined that the two small bags contained a substance that was consistent with the characteristics of methamphetamine. Additionally, agents found two glass containers hidden inside the center console of the vehicle. Agents determined that the two glass containers contained a substance that was consistent with the characteristics of marijuana.
The total weight of the methamphetamine discovered was approximately 58 grams with an estimated value of $2,900.
The total weight of the marijuana discovered was approximately 10 grams with an estimated value of $400.
The driver and passenger, both United States citizens, were taken to the station for further processing and then released. The narcotics were seized.
