Leading with Global Interoperability Standards

World with locations connected by points of light.

CBP supports the creation and use of global interoperability standards, or standards that guide software development and enable different systems to connect and exchange data, bridging data silos that exist today among global supply chain participants. To facilitate this development, CBP is investing in standards and technologies that will foster a transparent, seamless, and global supply chain.

CBP’s support for international interoperability standards continues to gain traction. For example, CBP’s advocacy contributed to the recent adoption of Decentralized Identifiers (DID) and Verifiable Credentials (VC) as an official web standard by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), as detailed in this W3C Press Release. CBP is also focused on the implementation of VCs, which, together with DIDs, form a strong identifier for entities participating in supply chains. In addition, CBP is working closely with private sector partners to establish additional verifiable trade data standards across several standardization bodies. Ultimately, the goal is to integrate technology solutions via global interoperability standards, allowing trade partners to maintain technology choice while future-proofing the industry for new and disruptive technologies.
