Statement on Death of Woman Disembarking from Cruise Ship

MIAMI – At approximately 6 a.m. on May 2, 2022, the Carnival Conquest cruise ship arrived at the Miami Seaport in Florida. A female U.S. citizen passenger debarked from the ship at approximately 8:26 a.m. and was transiting through the cruise ship terminal towards the Passport Control primary area when she collapsed to the ground after stepping off an escalator and entering a passenger processing queue.

Two passengers began lifesaving efforts by applying chest compressions. Customs and Border Protection Officers and a Miami Dade Police Officer arrived at the scene shortly afterwards and continued lifesaving efforts on the woman. The Miami Dade Police Officer attached an automated external defibrillator to the woman and shocked her three times while the CBP officer contacted 911 emergency services.

Miami County Rescue Station 39 arrived on scene at approximately 8:37 a.m. and took over lifesaving efforts. The woman was transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital by Miami County Rescue at approximately 8:44 a.m. and was pronounced deceased at approximately 9:31 a.m. by hospital staff.

The Miami Dade Police Department and U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s Office of Professional Responsibility are reviewing this incident.
