In Custody Death of Female Honduran in Rio Grande Valley, Texas

Release Date
Sun, 04/18/2021

At approximately 8:30 PM on April 15, 2021, Border Patrol Agents were notified by a member of a migrant group that a female was in medical distress near the Rio Grande in Hidalgo, Texas. Two agents immediately responded to the area, just west of the Hidalgo Port of Entry, and located an adult female who was incoherent and in medical distress. The female was traveling with her adult daughter and two juvenile children. Border Patrol Agents summoned Emergency Medical Services to better assess the subject. Due to the remoteness of the location where she was found and the need for prompt medical attention, agents transported her to a nearby location where they were met by an ambulance that transported the female to McAllen Medical Center.

On April 16, 2021, at approximately 4:30 p.m., medical personnel advised Border Patrol agents that she had passed away. The Consulate of Honduras was notified and assisted informing the juvenile children of their mother’s death. Medical and other personnel at the Donna Processing Facility are providing support to the children.  U.S. Customs and Border Protection is working with partner agencies to expedite the process of the family being moved out of CBP custody as quickly as possible.

This incident is under review by the CBP Office of Professional Responsibility. The Department of Homeland Security Office of Inspector General was notified of the incident.
