CBP Partners with Chicago Department of Aviation to Launch Self-Service Kiosks at O'Hare

CHICAGO—U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the Chicago Department of Aviation announced today that Automated Passport Control is now available for U.S. citizens at O'Hare International Airport. This new technology will allow travelers to scan their own passport, complete their Customs declaration and confirm travel information using a self-service kiosk before reaching the CBP officer to complete the inspection.

"To remain competitive in the global economy, we must continue to optimize our resources and realize efficiencies at our nation's international airports," said CBP Acting Deputy Commissioner Kevin K. McAleenan. "Thanks to the City of Chicago, automated passenger processing at International Terminal 5 will not only improve security, it will benefit travelers, the travel industry and ultimately the nation's economy."

Automated Passport Control removes the administrative responsibility for a CBP officer to scan a traveler's passport and verify their paper Customs declaration, reducing the time a traveler spends with a CBP officer.

During the short time the kiosks have been in place at Chicago O'Hare, CBP has seen a 40 percent decrease in wait times for U.S. citizens with more than 60 percent of eligible travelers using the kiosks. "This innovative technology has made a huge impact. The statistics speak for themselves," said Rosemarie S. Andolino, Commissioner, Chicago Department of Aviation. "Wait times during peak periods have been reduced by 33 percent from 50 minutes to 34 minutes."

Automated Passport Control is a key component of CBP's overall Resource Optimization Strategy which intends to maximize existing resources, identify staffing needs, and explore funding sources to support identified staffing needs.

The APC system was initially developed by Vancouver Airport Authority and U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Vancouver Airport Authority partnered with the Chicago Department of Aviation to provide software technology and self-service kiosks to O'Hare International Airport.
