Border Patrol K9 Team Locates Two Illegal Aliens in Richford, Vermont

RICHFORD, Vt. – U.S. Border Patrol agents from the Richford Station apprehended two illegal aliens attempting to hide near a river on June 3.

On Monday morning, the Tactical Communications Center (TCC) at the Swanton Sector Headquarters notified Border Patrol agents that a male and female were walking southbound into the United States along the border with Canada. The couple was carrying luggage and walking through a remote field.

As agents responded to the area they could see the couple in the field, but lost sight of them as they got closer. A Border Patrol canine team deployed to the last known location and followed their trail for approximately 500 yards. The team quickly located the couple, who were attempting to conceal themselves from detection near a river bank. The man and woman are citizens of Mexico without immigration documentation allowing them to enter or remain in the United States legally. They were taken into custody and transported to the Richford Border Patrol Station for additional record checks and post arrest processing.

“Border Patrol canines are trained to detect persons attempting to conceal themselves,” said Special Operations Supervisor Greg Furnia, Swanton Sector’s Canine Coordinator. “The Border Patrol canine team is one of the best available tools to detect and apprehend persons attempting to illegally enter into the country.”

The two individuals were turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Office of Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) for removal proceedings.

The Swanton Sector is responsible for securing the land border between ports of entry in Vermont, New Hampshire and northeastern New York. The coordination with assistance of citizens is invaluable to the Border Patrol's border security mission and we welcome community members' help to keep our nation’s borders safe. Please report suspicious activity at 1-800-689-3362.
