Virgin Islands CBP Identifies U.S. Citizen with Outstanding Warrant from Florida

ST. CROIX, U.S. VIGIN ISLANDS—U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers in the U.S. Virgin Islands identified yesterday a man sought out for failure to appear on driving under the influence (DUI) charges in Broward County, Florida. Matthew Lawrence, 46, a citizen of the United States and resident of Texas, was identified after he presented himself for CBP pre-departure inspection at the Henry E. Rohlsen Airport in St. Croix, before boarding an American Airlines flight bound to Miami.

Law enforcement databases alerted to an outstanding warrant for his arrest on charges of failure to appear regarding a DUI in Florida.

"Customs and Border Protection officers work diligently at the borders, facilitating travelers while making sure individuals encountered that might have transgressed U.S. laws are detained and brought to justice," stated St. Croix Port Director Douglas Vinroy.

CBP officers in St. Croix contacted CBP officers in Miami, and arrangements were made to have the officers meet the subject planeside upon his arrival at Miami. The officers confirmed Lawrence's identity and verified the outstanding warrant. Miami Dade Police Department was contacted, responded and took custody of the subject.

CBP officers detect many individuals wanted by authorities in the continental U.S., upon their arrival to the USVI, or upon their return to the mainland from Puerto Rico and the USVI.

CBP is charged with keeping terrorists and terrorist weapons out of the country while enforcing hundreds of U.S. laws.
