U.S. Border Patrol Checkpoints Seize Drugs Worth Over $900K

Salton City, Calif. - Over the weekend, U.S. Border Patrol Agents from the El Centro Sector foiled two drug smuggling attempts worth approximately $945,000.

The first incident occurred last Friday around 1 p.m. when a Border Patrol Canine team alerted to a black Jeep Liberty at the Highway 86 Checkpoint. The driver, a 43-year-old U.S. citizen male, was referred to secondary inspection where a thorough search was conducted of the vehicle. During the inspection agents discovered 20 sealed packages of methamphetamine inside the vehicle. The illegal narcotic weighed approximately 25 pounds and was given an estimated street value of more than $809,000.

The following day, a 22-year-old U.S. citizen male driving a black Honda CRV approached the Highway 111 Checkpoint. A Border Patrol canine team performing a cursory search alerted to the vehicle. While searching the cargo area, agents discovered two plastic bags of methamphetamine. The illegal drug weighed over 4 pounds and was given an estimated street value of more than $138,000.

Both drivers were placed under arrest and turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration along with the vehicles and methamphetamine.
