Smugglers attempt to exploit Rio Grande valley checkpoint through Christmas

FALFURRIAS, Texas — In the early morning hours of Friday, December 22, 2017 agents assigned to the Falfurrias Checkpoint were conducting immigration inspections when a tractor trailer occupied by two United States citizens approached the primary inspection lane. Upon inspection, agents discovered a total of six illegal aliens hidden inside the tractor. All subjects were arrested.

A few hours later, an agent observed a vehicle parked north of the Brooks County rest area. As the agent attempted to make contact with the driver of the vehicle, the driver drove off. After a brief pursuit, the driver finally stopped the vehicle and the occupants bailed out. Five individuals were apprehended - the U.S. citizen driver and four illegal aliens.

On December 24, 2017, checkpoint agents referred a passenger car to the secondary area after a Border Patrol K9 alerted to the vehicle. Upon investigation, agents discovered three illegal aliens concealed in the vehicle. A short time later, a second passenger vehicle was referred to secondary as a result of a K9 alert. Agents found another three, concealed illegal aliens. All subjects were arrested.

That same day, a truck hauling a camper was referred to secondary after a Border Patrol K9 alerted. Inside, agents discovered a total of 12 illegal aliens hidden throughout the camper. All subjects were arrested.

Throughout the holiday weekend, the Falfurrias Checkpoint agents interdicted an additional 10 smuggling cases bringing the weekend total to 14 alien smuggling attempts and 46 illegal aliens apprehended.
