San Juan CBP Seizes Concealed Heroin Inside a Traveler's Luggage

Release Date

San Juan, Puerto Rico - U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers seized Tuesday nearly 4 pounds of heroin concealed inside a passenger's luggage.

During passenger inspection of travelers arriving on board a Copa Airlines flight from Panama, Guillermo Berrios-Heredia, a 41-year-old United States citizen, claimed ownership of one hand bag and all its contents.

With the use of non-intrusive X-ray imaging CBP Officers examined the bag noticing an unusual weight and irregularities. Further probing of the bag revealed a white powdery substance hidden inside, testing positive to heroin.

The heroin has an estimated street value in Puerto Rico of $151,000.00.

CBP Officers arrested Berrios and later transferred custody to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Homeland Security Investigations for further investigation.

"The hard work and expertise of our officers continues to add to the safety of our community by disrupting the illegal contraband of money and drugs," said San Juan Acting Area Port Director Juan Hurtado.
