Rio Grande Valley Border Patrol agents seize more than $1.5M worth of drugs over several days

EDINBURG, Texas – Since Friday, Border Patrol Agents seized more than 1,900 pounds of marijuana. One of the seizures involved a vehicle driven into the Rio Grande, in a desperate attempt to avoid apprehension.

Friday evening, Rio Grande City agents working in La Rosita, Texas, observed a Ford sport utility vehicle (SUV) traveling north from the Rio Grande at a high rate of speed. As agents responded to the area, they discovered the SUV abandoned, with numerous bundles of marijuana inside. The drugs weighed more than 470 pounds worth more than $376K.

The following day, agents from the Rio Grande City station responded to a report of multiple drug smugglers walking north. As agents arrived to the area, the smugglers dropped the bundles and fled to Mexico. A search of the area led to the discovery of five bundles of marijuana weighing more than 286 pounds worth more than $229K.

On Sunday morning, Rio Grande City agent working near La Rosita, Texas, observed a sedan travel north of the Rio Grande suspected of drug smuggling. Responding agents arrived to the area and discovered an abandoned Chevrolet sedan with seven bundles of marijuana weighing more than 457 pounds. The marijuana has an estimated worth of $366K.

Yesterday, Rio Grande Valley Sector agents responded to a report of a suspected drug smuggling attempt in La Rosita, Texas. As agents arrived to the area, they discovered a submerged Chevrolet van in the Rio Grande loaded with numerous bundles of marijuana. Agents secured more than 690 pounds of marijuana worth an estimated $552K.
