Release Date
Thu, 06/25/2020

EDINBURG, Texas – During a failed marijuana smuggling event, a subject becomes combative with a Border Patrol agent.

This morning, agents assigned to the Rio Grande City station observed several subjects carrying what appeared to be bundles of narcotics emerge from a brushy area near the U.S. river bank.  Agents in the field responded and seized five bundles of suspected narcotics and apprehended two male subjects near Rio Grande City, Texas. During the arrest, one of the subjects became combative and attempted to tackle the arresting agent and take him to the ground. The agent was able to effect the arrest. The five bundles of marijuana weighed 347 lbs. and have an estimated value of $277,600.

All subjects will be processed accordingly.

In a separate incident at the Javier Vega, Jr. Checkpoint, Border Patrol agents referred a vehicle to secondary inspection following a K-9 alert. During the subsequent search, agents discovered 450 Xanax pills and a loaded firearm. The case was referred to local authorities for investigation.

The public is encouraged to take a stand against crime in their communities and report suspicious activity at 800-863-9382.

Even with the spread of the COVID-19 virus, human smugglers continue to try these brazen attempts with zero regard for the lives they endanger nor to the health of the citizens of our great nation.  The U.S. Border Patrol agents of the Rio Grande Valley Sector will continue to safeguard the nation and community against these criminal elements.
