Subject caught with almost 5 pounds of cocaine

DETROIT— Detroit Station Border Patrol agents apprehended a Mexican citizen and convicted aggravated felon who unlawfully reentered the United States after a previous removal. The subject was arrested after a vehicle stop in Detroit.

The arrest took place on December 18, 2017, when U.S. Border Patrol agents encountered 44-year-old Mexican citizen Benedicto Guadalupe Galvez-Gomez, on Livernois Avenue in Detroit. During a field interview with Galvez-Gomez, he freely admitted that he was illegally present in the United States. Subsequent to his arrest, agents found two large brick-shaped objects concealed on his body. The substance inside the packages tested positive as cocaine, with a total weight of almost five pounds.

“Our communities are safer now that this criminal was taken off the streets,” Detroit Sector Acting Chief Patrol Agent Tony Barker said. “This is another great example of the value of having trained U.S. Border Patrol agents along our nation’s borders to help make our country more secure”, he added.

The case is currently being handled by the United States Border Patrol, Drug Enforcement Administration, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Detroit, Michigan, which accepted prosecution December 18, 2017, for “Title 8, United States Code, Section 1326, Unlawful Reentry after Removal” and “Title 21, United States Code, Sections 841(b)(1)(B), Intent to distribute a controlled substance.”
