Over $11M Worth of Marijuana Seized by Border Patrol Agents

Laredo, TX - On October 11,

Marijuana bundles concealed in metal box container

Laredo South agents were assigned to a temporary Border Patrol checkpoint located on Interstate Highway 83 south of Laredo, agents noticed a 2006 Red Mack Truck hauling a large metal box container make an abrupt U-turn and began driving erratically southbound on Zapata Highway. Agents conducted a vehicle stop of the Mack Truck driven by a 36 year old male from Alice, Texas. While interviewing the driver, agents noticed that the driver became nervous and had contradicting stories. The agents proceeded to use a service canine to conduct an external search of the truck. The service canine alerted to the metal box container. An x-ray scan of the vehicle indicated anomalies within the container.

After agents performed a physical inspection of the box container, they discovered multiple bundles wrapped in cellophane that tested positive for marijuana. A total of 731 bundles were seized. The contraband weighed 14,353.19 pounds and has a street value of $11,482,552.00 USD.

"This significant seizure illustrates the vigilance and hard work of our Border Patrol agents. Laredo Sector is committed to protecting our communities by continuing to disrupt transnational criminal organizations operating within the South Texas Corridor," said John C. Esquivel, Acting Chief Patrol Agent of the Laredo Sector.

The narcotics, vehicle and subject were turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration.
