CBP Field Operations Arrest Local Man with Methamphetamine Worth $2.5 Million at Hidalgo International Bridge

HIDALGO, Texas—U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Office of Field Operations (OFO) officers at the Hidalgo International Bridge arrested a 54-year-old man, a legal permanent resident (LPR) Mexican citizen from Pharr, Texas in connection with a failed drug smuggling attempt of alleged methamphetamine worth $2,530,000.

“Just as smuggling organizations continue with their efforts of attempting to bring dangerous drugs into our country, our frontline officers counter those attempts through a steadfast commitment to keep our communities safe,” said Port Director Carlos Rodriguez, Port of Hidalgo/Pharr/Anzalduas.

The incident, which involved the male lawful permanent resident driving a silver 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee, occurred on Aug. 31 at the Hidalgo-Reynosa International Bridge. After initial questioning, CBP officers referred the man for further inspection. Officers conducting the secondary examination located 24 packages of alleged methamphetamine hidden within the tires of the SUV. These packages weighed 126.5 pounds (57.38 kg).

CBP officers seized the methamphetamine and the vehicle, arresting the driver who was turned over to the custody of agents with Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) who continue with the investigation.
