CBP Officers at Hidalgo International Bridge Arrest Woman Smuggling Cocaine Worth $36K

HIDALGO, Texas—Officers with U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Office of Field Operations (OFO) at the Hidalgo International Bridge arrested an 18-year-old woman from Reynosa, Tamaulipas, Mexico after discovering she was attempting to smuggle packages of cocaine from Mexico.

“Great teamwork, outstanding observational skills and dedication to the CBP mission is what allowed our frontline officers to intercept these narcotics,” said Port Director Sylvia Briones, Port of Hidalgo/Pharr/Anzalduas. “It is a shame that young people are falling prey to smugglers and being utilized to conduct these types of activities.”

The incident occurred on July 30, 2019 after a CBP officer referred a Mexican citizen  arriving from Mexico as a pedestrian at the Hidalgo-Reynosa International Bridge pedestrian walkway for further inspection.  Officers conducting the secondary examination discovered the woman was attempting to conceal two packages of alleged cocaine on her body.

CBP officers arrested the woman and seized the narcotics that weighed 4.67 pounds (2.12 kg) and have a street value of $36,000.

The investigation continues by Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Homeland Security Investigations (HSI).
