Nogales, Ariz. — A Mexican national was arrested yesterday at the Port of Nogales for attempting to smuggle nearly 1,900 pounds of drugs into the United States.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers referred a 40-year-old Nogales, Sonora, Mexico resident for an additional inspection of the Freightliner tractor-trailer he was driving into the Mariposa Commercial Facility. After a CBP narcotics detection canine alerted to the presence of drugs inside the shipment of Mexican squash, officers removed three pallets of marijuana worth close to $943,000.

The drugs and vehicle were processed for seizure. The driver was turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations.

CBP is the primary organization within Homeland Security tasked with an anti-terrorism mission. CBP officers screen all people, vehicles and goods entering the United States while facilitating the flow of legitimate trade and travel.
