LAREDO, TEXAS – U.S. Border Patrol agents assigned to the Interstate Highway 35 checkpoint defeated an attempt to smuggle black tar heroin north of Laredo.

The attempt occurred during the early afternoon of November 2, when a gray pickup truck with two visible occupants approached the checkpoint.  During an immigration inspection of the driver and passenger, the driver exhibited extremely nervous behavior.  The vehicle was referred to secondary inspection.  A scan was conducted revealing 20 greased bundles hidden inside two vehicle drive shafts that were being transported in the bed of the pickup.

The bundles were determined to contain black tar heroin.  They had a total weight of 45.68 pounds with an approximate street value of $3,920,224.  The driver and passenger, both U.S. citizens, were placed under arrest.  Investigation into the case was turned to Special Agents of the Drug Enforcement Administration who took custody of the narcotics.  The vehicle was seized by the U.S. Border Patrol.

Laredo Sector Chief Patrol Agent Matthew J. Hudak stated, “Despite the challenges of COVID-19, Border Patrol agents remain vigilant in securing our borders from all threats, including the smuggling of drugs into the country.  Agents from the Laredo North station quickly responded to this incursion and stopped a substantial amount of drugs from making it to communities within the U.S.”

The Laredo Sector is made up of agents who continue to meet the enduring mission priorities of the agency to counter terrorism, combat transnational crime, secure the border, facilitate lawful trade and travel while protecting revenue.
