TUCSON, Ariz. – U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers arrested a 29-year-old Mexican man Wednesday, for an alleged attempt to smuggle 80 pounds of marijuana through the Port of Naco.
Officers selected Hugo Cancio-Nevarez, of Benjamin Hill, Sonora, Mexico, for further inspection of his Mitsubishi SUV and with the assistance of a CBP narcotics detection canine. During the inspection, officers found multiple packages of marijuana, valued at nearly $40,000 beneath the vehicle’s carpeting.
Officers seized the drugs and vehicle, and referred Cancio to the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office where he will be held for local prosecution.
