Luis E. Marin Laredo Sector Border Patrol Youth of the Year 2012 Honored at Texas Capital
Laredo, Texas - United States Border Patrol Youth of the Year for 2012 Luis E. Marin was honored by Texas State Senator Judith Zaffirini yesterday.
The Youth of the Year is chosen each spring from the nine local high school students who are recognized throughout the school year by the Laredo Sector Border Community Liaison Program Youth of the Month competition. Announcement of the Youth of the Year is conducted during the annual Youth Night banquet that features the introduction of all nine students who were considered for the award. The identity of the Youth of the Year is not revealed prior to the banquet.
Luis is the son of Pedro and Maricela Marin. All of the Youth of Year contenders presented strong portfolios; Luis rose to the top by demonstrating stellar academic performance and strong community involvement. Later this month, Luis will graduate as the Valedictorian of his class with a grade point average of 101.57 and maintains a 3.842 GPA in his university classes.
Luis did not devote all of his time and energy strictly to academics during his high school years. He was involved with or participated in the following activities, programs and clubs; he is an active member of the Spanish Honor Society, National Honor Society, HEB Feast of Sharing and volunteered with the Animal Shelter. Luis also participates in UIL academics where he competes in mathematics, science, calculator applications, spelling, and ready writing.
After graduation, he plans to attend Baylor University or UT-Dallas to obtain a degree in Molecular and Cellular Biology and eventually become a physician.
As the 2012 U.S. Border Patrol Youth of the Year, Luis received two $1,000 scholarships from program partners Pediatrician Dr. Sara Campos and Glen Ruiz with Royal Laser Wash. AHEC presented the student with a special recognition plaque and Best Buy donated a laptop for his college studies.
Luis, along with his family members and educators, were special guests at the Texas Capitol. The group met with Texas State Senator Judith Zaffirini and received a VIP tour of the Texas Capitol. A private reception sponsored by BBVA- Compass Bank was held in his honor. Program partners to include AHEC were on hand to congratulate Luis. It was truly a special day for Luis and his family.
The Laredo Sector Border Patrol established the Youth of the Month program in 1986. For over seventeen years Senator Zaffirini has been hosting our Youth of the Year winners at the Texas Capital. The program recognizes one student a month from Laredo area high schools. Students are selected for the honor based on academic achievement, community involvement and demonstration of the determination to succeed no matter what obstacles that they may encounter.
