Local U.S. Customs and Border Protection Port Director Receives National Leadership Award
BROWNSVILLE, Texas - Port of Brownsville Port Director (PD) Petra Horne was selected as the recipient of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Commissioner’s Leadership Award for her vision and leadership skills demonstrated since she arrived at the Port of Brownsville.
“I am extremely proud of PD Horne and the recognition she has earned,” said Director David P. Higgerson, Laredo Field Office. “Her professionalism and leadership has motivated and maximized the potential of the managers and officers from the Brownsville Port of Entry.”
Changes were immediately noticeable in 2014 upon the arrival of PD Horne at the Port of Brownsville. From the onset, she spearheaded a clear vision and implemented a strategic plan that focused on collaboration, innovation, and integration. Her vision and leadership skills have motivated many employees to improve their performance and invest in improving themselves.
PD Horne has worked with local leaders and stakeholders to bring lane expansions at the Veterans International Bridge for passenger processing and commercial cargo lanes. She has also worked with local civic leaders to bring the addition of a cold storage facility to the Los Indios International Bridge.
Moreover, Ms. Horne has promoted CBP modernization efforts to streamline the traveler’s inspection process and increase officer efficiency. Thus, implementing Active Lane Management and expanding the use of Ready Lanes at all of the port’s border crossings.
Overall, PD Horne’s leadership style can be described as having a multiplier effect by encouraging employees to use their own natural abilities to amplify and bring out the best in those around her and motivate them to increase their potential. Her innovative ideas have transformed the climate at the Port of Brownsville by providing exceptional leadership skills and bringing together a clear vision, direction, and mentorship to a diverse workforce. The continued success of the Port of Brownsville is a direct reflection of the valor, perseverance and unwavering leadership of Port Director Petra Horne.
