Road Work Improvements and Pedestrian Flow Adjustments at World Trade Bridge Begin in May

LAREDO, Texas — U.S. Customs and Border Protection Laredo Port of Entry, together with partners from the City of Laredo is advising the international trade community that work is slated to begin on or about May 1 on a paved road in the Inspiration Point area designed to increase the throughput at World Trade Bridge. This is a roadway improvement that will ultimately support the Donations Acceptance Program project which will be finalized later this year.

The first phase of the project includes a paved lane by the City of Laredo for empty trailers to run directly from the bridge through the area formerly known as Inspiration Point under the Free and Secure Trade (FAST), a trusted shipper program. The project will eventually expand to four lanes but will begin with one lane and will utilize mobile processing technology and a non-intrusive imaging system for spot compliance checks.

“We are excited to move forward in this collaborative effort with the City of Laredo under the Donations Acceptance Program that will expand our capacity to process trusted shipper traffic at World Trade Bridge and also to alleviate congestion through expanded egress infrastructure outside of our import lot,” said Port Director Albert Flores, Laredo Port of Entry.

“This project will significantly improve our trade operations at World Trade Bridge as we work to expand Port Laredo even further,” said Mayor Pete Saenz. “I thank CBP for working with the City on these ambitious endeavors that will allow us to compete globally in the trade industry.”

Concurrent with this project is a pilot initiative designed to improve public safety by limiting passengers and pedestrians transiting the facility to drivers and relay drivers only. This will enhance public safety as the FAST lane project begins to expand.

At the same time, also on May 1, work will begin on a widening, expansion of the lanes that depart from World Trade Bridge Import lot toward Loop 20. This widening effort will eliminate bottlenecking of traffic, alleviate traffic safety issues and facilitate egress from the facility.
