LAREDO, Texas –Laredo Sector Border Patrol agents rescued several undocumented immigrants. On January 18, 2017, Border Patrol agents assigned to the Laredo Sector rescued 2 undocumented immigrants, one lost in remote ranch lands and the other rescued in the Rio Grande River.
The first incident occurred around 9:00 a.m., when Border Patrol agents from the Laredo Sector Marine Unit observed a person struggling to stay afloat in deep water. Marine agents were able to reach the person and helped him on to their Border Patrol vessel. The person was evaluated by a Border Patrol Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and was transported to a local hospital for further evaluation. After his release from the hospital, the undocumented immigrant was processed accordingly.
The second incident occurred around 10:45 a.m., when agents from the Laredo North Station responded to a call regarding a lost subject in a local ranch. Border Patrol agents encountered a lost subject that was abandoned in the remote ranchland. The lost individual was determined to be an unaccompanied child from Mexico and was found in good health. The subject will be processed accordingly.
“I am very proud of our men and women who continue to perform above and beyond the call of duty to assist people who are encountered in dangerous situations while wading the Rio Grande River or traversing in remote and unhospitable ranchlands,” said Mario Martinez, Laredo Sector Chief Patrol Agent.
Under the umbrella of the Border Safety Initiative created in 1998, The U.S. Border Patrol strives to prevent deaths and increase rescues of illegal immigrants who fall prey to callous, unscrupulous human smugglers who place them in dangerous situations to fend for themselves. The deployment of specialized personnel, area-specific technology, and public awareness campaigns are among the efforts undertaken by The U.S. Border Patrol each year in order to prevent the unfortunate loss of life.
