annual Border Safety Initiative event.

LAREDO, TEXAS– On April 20, 2017, The United States Border Patrol discussed the dangers of crossing the border by highlighting the Border Safety Initiative (BSI).  The Border Safety Initiative is a humanitarian, bi-national strategy designed to reduce migrant deaths and make the border safer for agents, border residents, and migrants.  Additionally, Laredo Sector held a local press availability to discuss the BSI.  The Border Patrol BORSTAR (Search Trauma and Rescue) agents, Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT) and Border Patrol Marine unit provided a mock water and land rescue demonstration to members of the media.

Consular officials from El Salvador, Guatemala and Mexico were present at today’s event.

“We thank the members of the media and consular officials for attending our annual Border Safety Initiative event. With your assistance you are helping us promote the dangers of crossing illegally.  We would also like to thank Texas Parks and Wildlife for hosting the event at Lake Casa Blanca International State Park,” said Acting Division Chief Jaime Fierro.

The BSI was implemented on June 16, 1998, building on the longstanding public safety and humanitarian measures practiced by the United States Border Patrol.  The intent of the initiative is to educate and inform potential migrants of the dangers and hazards of crossing the border illegally and to respond to those who are in life-threatening situations.
