Laredo Sector Border Patrol Disrupts Drug Smuggling Attempts

LAREDO, Texas – The first seizure took place on July 1, 2017, after Border Patrol agents seized 376.6 pounds of marijuana in Laredo, Texas.  Agents at the Border Patrol Checkpoint on Interstate Highway 35 encountered a white Hummer at the primary lane.  The driver was questioned regarding his immigration status and consented to further inspection.  The vehicle was referred to secondary for further inspection.  Agents conducted a further search of the vehicle resulting in the seizure of 16 bundles of marijuana concealed in the cargo area of the vehicle.  The marijuana was estimated to have a value of $301,312.60.  The driver, a United States Citizen was arrested.  The driver, vehicle and marijuana were turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration.

The second seizure took place on July 3, 2017, after Border Patrol agents seized 152.9 pounds of marijuana in Laredo, Texas.  Agents at the Border Patrol Checkpoint on Interstate Highway 35 encountered a blue tractor hauling a white trailer at the primary lane.  The driver was questioned regarding his immigration status and consented to further inspection.  A non-intrusive inspection of the tractor revealed anomalies in the cargo area.   A further search of the vehicle resulted in the seizure of 6 bundles of marijuana concealed in the sleeper cab of the tractor.  The marijuana was estimated to have a value of $122,320.00.  The driver, a United States Citizen was arrested.  The driver, vehicle and marijuana were turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration.

The third seizure occurred on July 4, 2017, when Border Patrol agents were working their assigned duties south of Laredo, Texas seized 367.9 pounds of marijuana.  Agents observed a suspicious vehicle being loaded with bundles.  As agents approached the vehicle, the subjects drove off at a high rate of speed causing the rear hatch to open.  The driver absconded to a nearby neighborhood and the agents were able to locate 5 abandoned bundles within the vicinity.  The bundles tested positive for marijuana with an estimated value of $294,320.00.  No arrests were made.  The marijuana was turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration.

The last event occurred on July 7, 2017, when Border Patrol agents responding to a report of suspicious vehicle on Mines Road, west of Laredo, Texas seized 348.99 pounds of marijuana.  As agents approached the white Nissan pick-up, the driver maneuvered off the highway and absconded into the brush.  Border Patrol agents discovered 5 bundles within the vehicle.  The bundles tested positive for marijuana with an estimated value of $279,200.00.  No arrests were made.  The marijuana was turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration.
