Salton City, Calif. -U.S. Border Patrol agents assigned to the Indio Border Patrol station arrested a 23-year-old United States citizen attempting to smuggle methamphetamine Saturday afternoon.
The incident occurred at the Highway 86 Checkpoint near Salton City around 2:45 p.m., when a Border Patrol canine team performing a cursory search of a 1996 Chevrolet pick-up truck alerted to the vehicle. During further inspection, agents discovered thirteen cellophane wrapped packages hidden within the engine compartment. The packages contained approximately nine pounds of methamphetamine with an estimated street value of $300,000.
The driver, vehicle and methamphetamine were turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration.
