SALTON CITY, CALIF.—On Wednesday afternoon, El Centro Sector Border Patrol agents assigned to the Indio station apprehended a suspected drug smuggler and seized over $66,000 worth of marijuana.
Border Patrol agents at approximately 1:30 p.m. encountered a 34-year-old female driving a 2006 Dodge Durango as she approached the Highway 86 checkpoint located between Westmorland and Salton City. A Border Patrol canine team alerted to the vehicle and referred the driver to secondary for further inspection. Upon further inspection of the vehicle, agents discovered 18 packages of marijuana secreted in all four door panels and inside a spare tire. The marijuana had a combined weight of 82.9 pounds with an estimated value of over $66,000.
The woman, a citizen of the United States, was arrested. The suspect, vehicle, and marijuana were turned over to the Imperial County Sheriff's Office for further investigation.
