Del Rio Border Patrol Sector Sees Rise in Migrant Deaths

DEL RIO, Texas – U.S. Border Patrol agents assigned to Del Rio Sector have recovered a total of seven deceased individuals during the months of June and July.

“These summer temperatures and scarce water resources create a very costly, often deadly reality for individuals attempting to enter the United States illegally,” said Acting Del Rio Sector Chief Patrol Agent Matthew Hudak.

The loss of life is tragic and Del Rio Sector along with the entire Border Patrol, have been proactive in trying to decrease those numbers. A comprehensive strategy known as the Border Safety Initiative (BSI) was created to help reduce injuries and prevent migrant deaths along the Southwest Border. In particular, the BSI is intended to educate and inform potential migrants of the dangers and hazards of crossing the border illegally and to respond to those who are in life-threatening situations.

The Del Rio Sector Emergency Medical Program has a total of 82 paramedic/EMTs to help in combating the loss of life and injury. These certified agents are able to provide IVs and other technical medical attention to not only fellow agents but also the people they encounter while working in the field. Along with the paramedic/EMTs, all Border Patrol agents are certified in providing first-aid.  

Del Rio Sector also has an elite unit known as the Border Patrol Search, Trauma, and Rescue Team.  These agents are trained in various facets of search and rescue and capable of responding to emergency situations along our southern border. They are trained in emergency medical, tactical medicine, dive and swift-water rescue along with other specialized medical training.

This time of year can be very deadly to those migrants making the dangerous trek through the desolate areas of the United States/Mexico border.  Often times, the migrant seeks help too late and it ends up costing them their life. The Border Patrol will continue doing its part in educating the public in regards to the risks and dangers associated with illegal crossings.
