U.S. Customs and Border Protection Officers assigned to the Columbus, New Mexico Port of Entry rendered lifesaving first aid to a man suffering an opioid overdose on December 6.
The incident occurred at approximately 11:40 a.m. as the 19-year-old U.S. Citizen who was being transported by his family, arrived via the pedestrian lanes suffering from a suspected overdose.
CBP officers who are certified Emergency Medical Technicians found the subject unconscious, unresponsive and failing to breathe adequately. CBPO/EMTs administered Naloxone (Narcan) along with further lifesaving airway management. Due to the CBP Officer's acute interventions, the subject's condition improved and he regained responsiveness.
“Homeland security is our primary mission, however, our officers are often called upon as first responders to assist in medical emergencies,” said Columbus Port Director Tony Hall, “Their quick response and life- saving efforts were critical in helping this man survive his medical emergency.”
EMS responded and transported the subject to a local hospital for care and treatment. The subject was released from the hospital at approximately 7:59 p.m.
