Officers stop traveler with felony warrant prior to boarding international flight
AUSTIN, Texas – U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport prevented a man with a felony warrant from boarding an international flight, Sept. 2.
Kerry Sloan, a 55-year-old U.S. citizen, had a warrant out of Tulsa, Oklahoma for Rape in the First Degree. CBP officers along with officers from the Austin Police Department (PD) met Sloan at the ticketing counter prior to the flight’s departure to London.
“This arrest demonstrates our agency’s effort to collaborate with other law enforcement agencies and prevent a fugitive from circumventing the justice system,” said CBP Austin Port Director, Richard Mendez. “CBP is dedicated to working with our partners to keep our communities safe and apprehend those who violate U.S. law.”
Austin PD arrested Sloan who is awaiting extradition to Tulsa.
CBP officers screen both foreign visitors and U.S. citizens arriving and departing the United States for outstanding arrest warrants, narcotics, unreported currency, weapons, prohibited agriculture, and other illicit products to assure that global tourism remains safe and strong. On a typical day in fiscal year 2017, CBP officers around the country arrested 21 wanted criminals at U.S. ports of entry.
