CBP Finds Farmer's Market in Traveler's Luggage

DALLAS - U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s agriculture specialists at the Dallas Fort Worth International Airport seized 25 pounds of fresh fruit and vegetables after a traveler declares food during CBP processing.

When the Peruvian national declared food, CBP agriculture specialists discovered a garden of prohibited food products scattered inside four pieces of luggage including fresh mangos, dry potatoes, bay leaves, ghost and bell peppers and purple corn.

CBP agriculture specialists take every precaution when inspecting fresh produce from various countries due to the likelihood of harmful insects found burrowing in fruits, vegetables, plants and other agriculture items which if introduced can wreak havoc on U.S. agricultural crops and forest trees.

“Our agriculture specialist’s understand the enormous responsibility involved in their daily duties,” said O’Ruill McCanlas, CBP Acting Area Port Director, Area Port of Dallas. “The introduction of harmful pests to our nation’s agriculture industry could be potentially devastating.” 

Since, the traveler made a truthful declaration, no penalties were assessed; however, CBP seized, quarantined and destroyed the produce, because the items were prohibited. Travelers can check the general admissibility of fruits and vegetables by consulting the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) or the Fruits and Vegetables Import Requirements (FAVIR) database. CBP also provides additional information on the importation of plants and plant products.

CBP officers facilitate lawful travel while maintaining border security, on a typical day in fiscal year 2018, agriculture specialists intercepted 319 pests at U.S. ports of entry and 4,552 materials for quarantine: plant, meat, animal byproduct and soil.
