DEL RIO, TEXAS—U.S. Border Patrol agents assigned to the Carrizo Springs Station apprehended a convicted sex offender Thursday afternoon.

Agents patrolling on the Hamilton Ranch encountered Esteban Arias-Gutierrez, 32, an undocumented immigrant from Mexico. During processing, agents discovered that Arias-Gutierrez had been previously deported from the United States and was a convicted sex offender. Criminal records checks revealed Arias-Gutierrez had a 2001 conviction out of Golden Valley, Minn. for first degree sexual contact and burglary.

Arias-Gutierrez will be charged with illegal entry - 8 USC 1325 - and his prior order of removal will be reinstated.

So far, during fiscal year 2013, Del Rio Sector agents have apprehended a total of 13 convicted sex offenders. The Del Rio Border Patrol Sector is part of the South Texas Campaign, which leverages federal, state and local resources to combat transnational criminal organizations.
