DEL RIO, Texas – U.S. Border Patrol agents assigned to the Carrizo Springs Station apprehended a convicted sex offender on March 2.

Agents patrolling near the Rio Grande River encountered Javier Cruz-Vasquez, 26, an undocumented immigrant from Mexico. During processing, agents discovered that Cruz-Vasquez had been previously deported from the United States and was a convicted sex offender. Criminal records checks revealed Cruz-Vasquez was convicted of a felony in Riverside, Calif. in 2011 for lewd acts with a child under 14. He was sentenced to 270 days in jail and 36 months probation.

Cruz-Vasquez faces a charge of illegal entry after removal - 8 USC 1326 - and his prior order of removal will be reinstated.
