EDINBURG, Texas – U.S. Border Patrol agents foiled two smuggling attempts resulting in the seizure of nearly 1,000 pounds of marijuana.

This morning, McAllen agents observed a Chevrolet Silverado parked near the Rio Grande in a rural area near Penitas, Texas. As mobile units responded to investigate, the driver of the pickup attempted to leave the area. When agents encountered the pickup, the driver turned the vehicle around and returned to the river at a high rate of speed. The driver abandoned the pickup and fled to Mexico. Inside the vehicle, agents discovered 67 bundles of marijuana weighing nearly 800 pounds worth an estimated $634K.

Hours later, agents working near Sullivan City, Texas, observed four subjects who had illegally entered the United States carrying three bundles of marijuana. Agents, along with an air asset from Air and Marine Operations, responded to the area, located the three bundles, and apprehended two illegal aliens. The bundles of marijuana weighed over 170 pounds worth an estimated $136K.

Border Patrol seized the pick-up and turned the marijuana over to the Drug Enforcement Administration.

The public is encouraged to take a stand against crime in their communities and report suspicious activity at 800-863-9382.
