Border Patrol Halts Dangerous Human Smuggling Attempt at Checkpoint in California

SALTON CITY, CALIF.—Yesterday, El Centro Sector Border Patrol agents assigned to the Indio Station apprehended a suspected human smuggler after agents found a man hidden in the trunk of his vehicle at the Highway 86 checkpoint.

The incident occurred at approximately 7 p.m., when a 19-year-old male driver approached the Border Patrol checkpoint located between Westmorland and Salton City. A canine detection team alerted to the 2012 Hyundai Sonata as it approached the primary inspection lane. The vehicle was promptly referred to secondary inspection where agents discovered a man hiding in the trunk. The 38-year-old man, a Mexican national was showing symptoms of heat related injuries. Agents immediately contacted Emergency Medical Technicians, who transported the man to Pioneer's Memorial Hospital. The 38-year-old year old man was later released and transported back to the checkpoint for processing.

The male driver, a United States citizen, was taken into custody and is pending prosecution.
