TUCSON, Ariz. – Nogales Station Border Patrol agents apprehended a previously deported Mexican national with a violent criminal history which includes sexual assault, after he entered the U.S. illegally Wednesday evening in Nogales.

During processing, agents conducting a records check on 37-year-old Rene Muñoz Renteria discovered his extensive criminal history includes a 2003 conviction for attempted sexual assault in Phoenix, for which he served five years in prison.  Muñoz also has convictions for kidnapping and possession of fraudulent documents.

Muñoz will remain in federal custody to face felony immigration prosecution.

All persons apprehended by the Border Patrol undergo criminal history checks using biometrics to ensure illegal aliens with criminal histories are positively identified.
